Day 18 – Drifters via Stoney Pass

40 days – 40 hikes – Walking 4 Education

Do your little bit of good where you are. It’s those little bits of good put together that can overwhelm the world – Desmond Tutu

We woke early at Sungubala Camp, sent the children off to school and then headed off in the direction of Bishop’s Inkaba. It’s a little pull up to the contour path and then we did a little bundu-bashing towards the cliff line.

In the olden days the quickest way up was via Sungubala Pass but this was also a great route for rustling horses so it was blasted in the 80’s. Since then it has been used seldom and has become so overgrown and so Godfrey led us up a different route through the cliff line… Now named the Godfrey Miya Pass.

We got onto a contour above the cliffs and made out way towards Sungubala Mountain. We climbed Sungubala and headed eastwards and then north to the Stoney Pass.

The wind had picked up and we were quick to get off the top. Stoney Pass is quite a good way down. The route is well worn and brings you out onto a lovely contour beneath the cliff line.

We stopped for a quick bite and a good coffee before heading towards Drifters Drakensberg Lodge. We stripped off our boots and found some ice cold beers!

Great day and definitely something to consider for a weekend getaway in the Northern Berg!
