Fishing

Recently we began stocking Darter Dam, next to the stables, with Tilapia & Bass and we encourage families to fish here, catch and release. Please bring along your own rods and lures.

Trout fishing is available in the cooler months in 3 dams situated in the hills behind the resort; Cowslip Falls Dam, Top Dam & Wattle Dam. The dams are stocked annually. Catch and release is encouraged. Please bring along your own rods and flys.

      Hi Linda
Many thanks. We have responded on email but have stopped hiring out gear because of the expense of the many repairs…
      Warm wishes

  1. Good day

We will be staying in central Drakensberg in the March holidays and I’d like to gift hubby with a trout fishing day. Where are you based and could you kindly provide me with costs involved.

      Hi Karin
We are based in the Northern Drakensberg but fishing would be for residents only.
I am not sure whereabouts you are staying but I believe the river fishing in the southern berg is very good.
You could possibly approach KZN Wildlife? I am not sure if this is offered by them in different places in the berg?
      With best wishes,
      Megan

  2. Hi
Just checking – is your trout dams stocked.
Are they in easy walking distance from the hotel.
Can’t imagine coming to the berg and not wetting a line
    Many thanks

      Hi Marius
The trout dams are up in the mountains, about a 15 minute walk but certainly worth the effort.
More recently we have stocked the closer dams with bass and tipalia which keeps the children well entertained.
      Best wishes,
      Megan

      Hi Ephraim
We sell a trout fishing permit here at The Cavern and this is valid for your stay. You are welcome to bring your own rod along. Fish caught and kept are charged per kg.
      Best wishes,
      Megan

      Hi Sean
You are welcome to use a floating tube on our dams. Please just note that they are mountain dams are are not huge and they are a short walk from the hotel.
      Best wishes,
      Megan
