About

The Cavern is home to Bushman paintings, age-old rock carvings and an interesting cannibal history – all in a natural setting, where bird, animal, tree and flower species flourish. It is also home to The Royal Drakensberg Primary School, founded in 2007 to uplift the local community. The journey to The Cavern is a beautiful country drive – 3.5-hours from Jo’burg or 3-hours from Durban.

Fondly known as ‘The Resort of Many Happy Returns’, The Cavern is a place where families bond, friendships are formed and memories are made. It is a special, tucked-away romantic getaway for couples, a gentle place to find quiet and solitude, as well as a safe and child-friendly resort with a range of fun activities for families.

Enjoy a quiet read in one of our attractive lounges, an elegant tea on the lawn, a drink in the Cave Bar or choose a wine from our cellar to enhance your dining experience.

      Hi Rukshana
Unfortunately we don’t have any self-catering units at The Cavern but you can try our sister camp, Sungubala Eco Camp. They have lovely units set on a private mountain farm. Please contact them directly

    Good Afternoon,

As a day visitor we were turned away by the sign at your gate stating “no day visitors allowed”. You should publicize this on your website to avoid any misunderstanding and waste of time and petrol. You are not alone, as Alpine Heath also turned us away. Your decision, but you do need to advise prospective visitors on your website, unless I missed something?

      Good afternoon, Graham.
Thank you for taking the time to be in touch and to share your thoughts.
Unfortunately, when we are busy we do not allow day visitors because it actually impacts on our in-house guests and their stay. When it is quieter, and we prefer by arrangement, we do welcome day visitors to The Cavern.
It is something that needs to be managed. Unfortunately we have had a few problems in the past and so we have become less flexible in the peak periods.
We do apologise for the inconvenience but this information is on our website; https://www.cavern.co.za/book/contact-us/
      With best wishes,

  3. Hi. 2 questions please.
Is there cell phone reception that is consistent enough if we nee to work at the resort?
Is there a gym on site? If so, what facilities? Are there spinning bikes?

    Many thanks,
    Neena

      Hi Neena
Cell phone signal is pretty good. This week there have been issues with Vodacom but we do also have WiFi which is quite reliable.
Unfortunately we do not have a gym. We have wonderful mountains and fabulous hiking and mountain biking.
      Best wishes.

      Hi Steph
Many thanks for the message. Regrettably, no pets allowed. We have 5 gorgeous hounds but they do not socialise well with other dogs.
      Our best wishes
      Megan
